After making waves in the country with its thought provoking social message, the acclaimed Malayalam drama The Great Indian Kitchen is setting its sights on repeating its success overseas. It was announced that the film will be released in Japan this month.

The announcement was made by the film’s writer and director Jeo Baby on his official Instagram handle. The post accompanied a poster of the film for Japanese audiences which showed the release date in the country. The film will be released in Japanese theatres on January 21, 2022.

The Great Indian Kitchen tells the story of a young newly married woman who struggles to adjust to the conservative views of her husband and his family, facing belittling whenever she tries to voice her concerns. As the instances get worse, she finds it difficult to suppress her emotions at the many indignities she has to face. It explores several hard hitting social themes such as patriarchy, orthodox customs and traditions, subtle misogyny within family systems and more.

The film stars Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramood in the lead roles as the newly married couple. T. Suresh Babu, Ajitha V.M, Ramadevi, Anupama V.P, Kabani and Sidhartha Siva feature in the movie in supporting roles. The film has music composed by Sooraj S. Kurup and Mathews Pulickan, while the cinematography was handled by Salu K. Thomas.

The film became critically acclaimed and won numerous accolades including the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film. The director Jeo also won the award for Best Screenplay and Tony Babu won for Best Sound Design.

The Great Indian Kitchen is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
