The 2003 super hit film Kal Ho Naa Ho starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan is set to be re-released in theatres on November 15.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles, Kal Ho Naa Ho is one of the classic films of Bollywood. Upon its release, the film was appreciated for its storyline, performances, songs, and everything else. The film is now all set to make a return to the theatres as it will be re-released. On this happy occasion, filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, the director of the film revealed that if the film was released today, it would have easily crossed the Rs 1000 crore mark at the box office.
In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Nikkhil Advani, who is currently promoting his upcoming historic drama 'Freedom At Midnight' shared his insights into the film's budget. The filmmaker revealed how the film's lasting legacy is shaped by its cast, story, and music and is not just about the financials. He also revealed that Kal Ho Naa Ho was made on a budget of just Rs 32 crore and according to him, if it was released today, it would easily make over Rs 1000 crore at the box office.
"Earlier, we could make a Kal Ho Naa Ho and no one used to care for how much it was made for and how it’s doing. It was made for Rs 32 crore. If you talk in terms of the inflation today, it would have made more than Rs 1000 crore. Understand the equity and soft power Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai have given to YRF and Dharma. It is too huge. One can’t use that concept now, today it’s only about these big numbers," the director said.
Nikkhil further spoke about the current industry focus and concern over its focus on blockbuster films with massive box office numbers. He said, “Three or four years ago, the kind of feature films that were being made, there was hope for middle-of-the-road cinema, which has vanished now. Either you made a blockbuster that earns Rs 600-800 crore, otherwise, you aren’t doing anything.”
