Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the upcoming film will revolve around the story of a treacherous duo featuring a manipulative carnival man and an equally devious psychiatrist.
After Shape of Water’s Oscar sweep way back in 2018, prolific director Guillermo del Toro is back with his latest directorial venture Nightmare Alley. First working stills from the upcoming movie, based on the 1946 novel sharing the name, were let out by Searchlight Pictures, which touts to be an elegant thriller oozing sophistication and refinement.
The photographs show its stellar cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette and Rooney Mara decked in suave looking American outfits of the 1940s, against the vintage and contemporary backdrop, which seem to indicate a carnival. The ensemble cast also includes Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Holt McCallany, Clifton Collins Jr. Tim Blake Nelson and Mary Steenburgen.
The film adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel will tell the story of a scheming carnival worker, Stan Carlisle, who seems to meet his match in the equally sly psychiatrist by the name of Dr. Lilith Ritter and will trace the duo’s adventures as they team up to swindle millionaires.

The photographs offer a taste of the visually stunning treat in store, a common trait in most of Guillermo del Toro’s projects of the fantasy genre. According to IGN, the Academy Award-winning director has assured viewers that his upcoming venture will have nothing supernatural in it and instead will be based in a ‘real world’. He also acknowledged that it will be different from his usual films.
The film is expected to release worldwide on December 17.
