A clip about Rajinikanth from the recently concluded Vaanam Film Festival observed for Dalit History Month, spearheaded by filmmaker Pa Ranjith, has gone viral on social media. The clip is from the panel discussion which involved Malayalam director Dr Biju talking about the Tamil superstar, which has invited mixed reactions from netizens, and some even calling out Ranjith for mocking Rajinikanth.

What happened in the panel?
For the unversed, Pa Ranjith has initiated Vaanam Film Festival which takes place every April in Chennai. The festival includes movie screenings and panel discussions to understand the narrative of caste in cinema.
However, a clip from the recently concluded this year’s panel has gone viral after Malayalam filmmaker Dr Biju passed some comments on Rajinikanth which evoked laughter among the audience as well as Ranjith. It is to be noted that Ranjith has worked in Rajinikanth in two films, Kaala and Kabali.
Speaking about it, Dr Biju said, “Ranjith spoke about the Dalit politics through Rajinikanth. I don't know if he (Rajinikanth) understands it or not but he (Ranjith) put the words through his mouth and it is important thing. It is happening here.” This comment made the audience break into a laughter, while Ranjith is also seen laughing to the comment.

The social discourse
After the said clip went viral on social media, scores of fans came to Rajinikanth’s defence and said how the actor had worked with Ranjith not once but twice, in Kaala and Kabali. Fans also begam to call out Ranjith for not defending Rajinikanth and laughing with the audience. Another social media user shared a clip of Rajinikanth's speech during Kaala audio release event and how the actor is well aware about the politics and what the filmmaker is trying to say through his films.
On the other hand, others began to poke fun at Rajinikanth for the clip, further instigating fan wars. Check out some of the reactions from netizens below:
