The streaming giant revealed that it was working on ways where users who share their accounts to people outside their household, could do so by paying extra
Netflix is by far one of the most widespread and far-reaching streaming services across the globe. But in some unfortunate news for subscribers, the company recently announced that it was working on a feature that would allow a user to share their accounts outside of their household only at an extra cost.
The streaming giant announced that it is currently testing out features that would stop a user’s profile from being shared with people across different locations, unless an extra sum is paid. Netflix is planning to introduce the same in the regions of Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Chengyi Long, Netflix’s product innovation director, made the announcement in a blog post.
The new features will allow users using the standard and premium plans to add sub accounts for two other people, they do not live with. It will also provide the users with the opportunity to transfer their profile information to a new account, retaining their personalised recommendations and viewing history. The new features will first be tested in the three countries before being implemented elsewhere.
“We recognize that people have many entertainment choices, so we want to ensure any new features are flexible and useful for members, whose subscriptions fund all our great TV and films,” Long’s post read.
As of now, the company’s paid plans allow users to create multiple profiles and users can also share their accounts with people across different locations. According to an NDTV report, Netflix’s quarterly reports showed that their growth rate in subscriptions has come down.
The streaming platform also has to compete with a host of other prominent global OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ (Disney+Hotstar in India), and more.
