Netflix renews The Upshaws for a second season

The second season of the series starring Wanda Sykes, Kim Fields and Mike Epps will have 16 episodes and will run in two parts.

OTT giant Netflix has just announced that their multi camera family comedy The Upshaws will come back for a second season. The second season of the series will have 16 episodes and will run in two parts, while the first season of the show had only 10 episodes. The comedy series stars Wanda Sykes, Kim Fields and Mike Epps in the lead roles.

Netflix’s new Head of Comedy Tracey Pakosta told Deadline in a conversation that Wanda Sykes and Regina Hicks have made an unconventional entry in Black sitcoms that are real and relatable with great humour. She also added that they are thrilled to see how this talented cast will handle the second season of Upshaws.

Created by Hicks and Sykes, The Upshaws revolves around the story of a African-American family in Indiana, who are struggling to make their life successful. Sykes also serves as a co-showrunner for the program. Green lighting the second season of The Upshaws is also seen as a vote of confidence at Netflix, because the streamer is taking a more refined approach to its scripted originals. The OTT giant was under criticism last week for cancelling Jamie Foxx starrer semi-autobiographical comedy - Dad, Stop Embarrassing Me after just one season. They had also shunned the second season of Kenya Barris’ BlackAF, which again brought them under the scanner.

Sources have confirmed that the streaming giant, under the leadership of Bela Bajaria, is looking for broader and more general programming unlike Bela’s predecessor, Cindy Holland, who focused on premium and niche programs.
