Netflix picks up streaming rights of Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch

Netflix has picked up the streaming rights for Studio Ghibli's anime feature Earwig and the Witch. The film will arrive on the platform on November 18.

According to Variety, Earwig and the Witch will be available to watch in all territories except for Japan and the US.

Director Goro Miyazaki said he is "thrilled" that his film will reach a wide audience through Netflix. "The film is Studio Ghibli’s first fully 3D CGI film which prompted us with an exciting challenge to reflect the spirit and pride of our studio using this new artform. Through that experience we met Earwig, our rebellious protagonist who grows to overcome difficulties with her wits and relentless energy," he said.

Earwig and the Witch tells the story of a young girl, whose life changes after a strange couple adopts her, and she is forced to live and work for a selfish witch. Earwig agrees, but one condition that the witch will teach her everything she knows about magic. The witch doesn't live upto her promises and Earwig decides to rebel.

Keiko Niwa and Emi Gunji have written the screenplay, which is inspired by a novel of the same name by English writer Diana Wynne Jones.

Earwig and the Witch is the latest Studio Ghibli title to join Netflix's extensive library that includes classics like My Neighbor Totoro Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

Netflix's press release states that the film will be available in 30 languages, including Japanese, English, Mandarin, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai and more languages in subtitles.
