Abhinav Sunder Nayak also opened up about the sequel plans of Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Mukundan Unni Associates
After a long wait, director Abhinav Sunder Nayak’s dark comedy Mukundan Unni Associates, starring Vineeth Sreenivasan as the narcissistic lawyer who goes to any length to achieve success, is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
During its theatrical run, apart from its script and characters, the dark comedy also stood out for its visual language. For instance, the screen width kept extending as the plot progressed – almost as an allusion to the titular character’s ambitions and his success. Also, the interval blocks had quirky animations, which were akin to breaking the fourth wall. All of these made for an interactive experience in theatres.
Ask Abhinav if he has made any changes for the OTT version, and the filmmaker, in an exclusive chat with OTTplay, tells us, “We haven’t made any changes to the OTT version. Mukundan Unni Associates was made for theatres. I don’t know what change can be done to this to suit the OTT platform because there are limitations when we adapt a kind of visual language for a film; you can’t change it based on platforms as that would change the whole purpose of the movie. So, I have retained the same version. It would be best to watch it in the widest screen possible.”
Soon after its theatrical release, the team of the movie, which also has Arsha Baiju, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Tanvi Ram and Sudhi Koppa in pivotal roles, also announced that Mukundan Unni Associates will be getting a sequel.
Was it the success of the film that spurred the team to make the quick announcement? “Actually, we didn’t have any ideas as such for the sequel before its release. We wanted to think about it, if the movie became a hit and that’s what happened,” Abhinav says. “After the first week of release, I had bounced off some ideas with my writer (Vimal Gopalakrishnan). Suddenly, we felt there’s a legitimate idea that we could develop for the sequel, especially after the audience had lapped up the movie.”
