Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway is a heart-wrenching story and the film is directed by Ashima Chibber.
Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway, a moving true story of a mother's struggle against a whole nation, is Rani Mukerji's comeback to the big screen on March 17. The narrative recounts the struggle of a mother in Norway whose kids are taken away by the government. The film is directed by Ashima Chibber and tells the narrative of how she fights to win them back.
Recently, the director got into an exclusive conversation with OTTplay. She talked openly about the movie's impact and working with Rani. She also spoke about what matters her more, box office numbers or critical acclaim. Keep reading!
When asked what made her approach Rani Mukerji for the role, the director said, "Rani was the only choice for me as I was looking for a fantastic actress and a great mother and a Bengali mother and someone who has the star power to carry a film on her shoulders. And to act in this film, you need guts. Because it's a strong film. It is the creative choices that you make, when you choose an actor, you can choose all sorts of actors but it has to not only fit the story but everything else. I cannot even imagine anyone else playing it as powerfully as she played this character."
She added, "Rani processes and performs the scenes so beautifully that you are stuck looking at her."
Later the director spoke about what is more important for her, the box office numbers or critical acclaim. She stated: "Both are important but box office numbers is the people and as a director I make film for the audience. And it costs money, it plays, people have an impact on it. To bring everyone into the hall and make them put their phones in their pocket and just see the film is a big deal and engage them. And this film does just that. The story is compelling, that goes with fantastic performance and we have put so much in the making of the film. And all these things because we could bring the people to the theatres. So of course box office is important."
"I am 100 percent confident that tis film is the quintessential film for all the mothers and children out there," Chibber added.
Meanwhile, talking about the film, the book 'The Journey of a Mother' by Sagarika Chakaraborty served as the inspiration for the movie. Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, directed by Ashima Chibber, also features Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh. On Friday, the movie opened in theatres.
