Monster, which is set to release on October 21, marks Mohanlal's second theatrical release this year after B Unnikrishnan's Aaraattu
After a gap of 10 months, Mohanlal is gearing up for his next theatrical release – Monster. And what makes it an anticipated project among the fans is that it also marks the second collaboration of the Pulimurugan team – director Vysakh, scriptwriter Udaykrishna and Mohanlal. If the trailer, which was released online on Sunday, was anything to go by, the film has enough twists to live up to the hype.
The trailer of the movie, which also has Lakshmi Manchu, Honey Rose, Siddique, Kailash, Lena and Sudev Nair, promises to be a riveting thriller that revolves around a mysterious stranger named Lucky Singh, essayed by Mohanlal. We get glimpses of an ensuing police investigation surrounding a woman as well as fake probe, reportedly carried out by the protagonist. The trailer also reveals several action-packed moments and a catchy background score by Deepak Dev. It also busts an earlier rumour that hinted that Monster will be a 'zombie thriller'. The trailer had the tagline - 'It takes a monster to bring down a monster'. The movie is currently expected to hit theatres on October 21.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Mohanlal had said that a key reason he decided to do the film with Vysakh and Udaykrishna during the pandemic was that it was their next movie after Pulimurugan and there would always be that curiosity among the fans of how the film would be. It was the same strategy that the film’s production company Aashirvad Cinemas had used while greenlighting films such as Drishyam 2 and Bro Daddy.
While Drishyam 2 was initially made to release in theatres with an aim to attract the audience back to the cinema halls, it dropped directly on Amazon Prime Video after theatres in Kerala remained shut due to the pandemic lockdown. Bro Daddy, which marked the reunion of Lucifer duo Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal too, was a straight to OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar.
The other three projects that were initially planned for OTT releases were Jeethu Joseph’s 12th Man, Shaji Kailas’ Alone and Vysakh’s Monster. 12th Man released on Hotstar and Alone is set to get its OTT premiere soon. However, the makers decided to release Vysakh’s Monster in theatres after realising that it has potential to draw the audience.
In a previous interview with OTTplay, Vysakh said that he was confident Monster would work both in OTTs as well as theatres due to the strength of its content. He had also said that the film will be different from the previous ‘mass’ commercial entertainers that he and Udaykrishna had teamed up in and is more of an experimental thriller that deals with a subject that has not been told before in Malayalam.
Mohanlal will be looking for a hit with Monster as his previous two films – Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham and Aarattu didn’t fare too well in the box office. The actor, meanwhile, is currently shooting for Jeethu Joseph’s Ram, which also has Trisha, Indrajith Sukumaran and Adil Hussain. He has also completed work on his directorial debut Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure.
