Packed with dark humour and unexpected twists, Netflix's Monica O My Darling’s cryptic ending will leave you wondering about what really happened long after you finish watching it
Monica O My Darling
Infused with mind-blowing dark humour and several surprises, Netflix's Monica O My Darling is a movie that stays with you even after the credits roll. Its climax is wrapped up in uncertainty, leaving the audience to piece together the truth and struggle with the questions it raises. The dark comedy thriller is mind-boggling, and Rajkummar Rao and Sikhander Kher’s performances will leave you stunned.
Driven by ambition and desperation, Jayant Arkhedkar, aka Johnny, finds himself with a peculiar group of accompanists: Nishikant Adhikari and Arvind Manivannan. Together, the trio hatches a dangerous plot—a murder so cunning that it will guarantee their rise to the top. But will their alliance hold? Or will their scheme be disclosed with deadly consequences?
Throughout the movie, director Vasant Bala ensures that this dark comedy makes viewers nostalgic and thrilled at the same time with a combination of retro music and modern twists. There are a lot of references to the 1960s in the movie, from the dressing sense, the dialogue delivery, and Human Qureshi’s dance numbers.
The surprising twists of Johnny dating his boss' daughter and also having a secret affair with Mr. Adhikari’s lady love, Monica, even though he’s supposed to get married soon, tell you that this is a bone-chilling thriller from the very beginning. However, the moment Monica tells Johnny that she's pregnant with his baby and blackmails him for child support, the movie becomes more intriguing. Rajkummar Rao’s facial expressions in every scene are something viewers will remember the most.
The suspense in Monica O My Darling has been masterfully crafted, leaving the audience in a state of constant speculations about Monica’s murder till the very end. Throughout the movie, suspicion fell upon the various men with whom Monica had affairs, their motives fueled by jealousy and potential rage. Even the cops seem convinced it was a meticulously planned murder. However, the movie’s final act throws a clue by delivering an unexpected explanation. It's revealed that Monica got killed by an entirely unexpected character named, Tamang. It exhibits that Tamang mixed her drink with lethal snake venom, and it leaves the other characters, as well as the viewers stunned.
The killer Tamang’s name is revealed by Naidu during Monica’s prayer ceremony. He tells Johnny that Mr. Satyanarayan Adhikari, who is the chairperson of his company, is the actual father of Monica’s unborn baby, and Monica was blackmailing every man she had an affair with, including Satyanarayan, to extort money. Hence, Satyanarayan hired Tamang to poison Monica, and then to keep Tamang quiet, Naidu killed him.
While this big reveal might not leave you gasping in shock quite like Ayushmann Khurrana's Andhadhun (2018), Anurag Basu's Ludo (2020) or Alia Bhatt's Darlings (2022), Monica O My Darling definitely won't lull you to sleep either. Vasan Bala offered his own brand of quirkiness and thrills, that will surely keep you glued to the screen whoever will watch for the first time.
