Sam Manekshaw’s famous connect with horses
The 61st Cavalry Regiment stands as a horse-mounted cavalry unit within the Indian Army, distinguished as one of the world's largest and, notably, one of the last operational un-mechanized horse-mounted cavalry units. While it once played an active role in conflicts, the 61st Cavalry is currently reserved for ceremonial duties, although it retains the capacity for deployment in internal security or providing military aid to civil power. Stationed in Jaipur, the regiment underwent a strategic shift in the late 1970s.
Recognizing the need for transformation, General Sam Manekshaw, the then-Indian Army Chief, was invited to become the next colonel of the 61st Cavalry. Acknowledging the necessity for change to prevent mechanization, Manekshaw relocated the regiment to Delhi in the lead-up to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. There, it assumed the responsibility of guarding the Rashtrapati Bhawan, ensuring the internal defense of Delhi, and participating in dismounted ceremonials.
Based on the life of Manekshaw, a movie is made by filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. It is titled ‘Sam Bahadur’ and will be released theatrically on December 1, 2023.
