The penultimate episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters sets up a Titan fest Season 1 finale, as the action heads to Hollow Earth
From the moment that Cate Randa (Anna Sawai), Col Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) and May (Kiersey Clemmons) fell into the portal to Hollow Earth in Kazhakstan, there was one theory that netizens were absolutely convinced about. Shaw was going to find out that he hadn’t exactly lost Dr Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) all those years ago. Keiko, said netizens, would be alive and kicking and turns out, they were not wrong. The Randa family matriarch is now a bow and arrow wielding “badass” – a bit like Avatar’s Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) – and either slaying titans, or just hurting them enough to scare them off. Episode 9, Axis Mundi, the penultimate one in season one of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ended with a kickass shot of Keiko ensuring that Cate does not become Brambleboar fodder.
While audiences are hoping for an action-packed Titan fest in next week’s finale, what they are also looking forward to is when Lee realizes that Keiko was alive all the while, which he didn’t know and that Bill (Anders Holm) lost his life looking for answers, thinking he’d lost both Keiko and Lee. That, they reckon, would be the biggest heartbreak moment of the season. Keiko’s appearance, not looking a day older than she was when last seen, should also provide answers to the question everyone has about Lee’s age.
The Apple TV+ show has got off to a good start with audiences, with widely positive reviews and feedback so far. Among the negatives pointed out so far is that for a show called Legacy of Monsters, it is more about the human drama than the Titans. This is actually true, with Godzilla, Ion Dragon, Frost Vark, Endoswarm, and Brambleboar being the only Monsters audiences have got to see so far and that too for only a few seconds each. The King of the Monsters, Godzilla, of course, has got the most screen space yet, but it’s not enough.
