The B Unnikrishnan directorial, scripted by Udaykrishna, hits theatres on February 18, 2022
Even as all eyes are on the theatrical release of Mohanlal’s Aaraattu – with it hitting 450+ theatres in Kerala alone and releasing in 52 countries on February 18, the movie’s digital rights have been sold at a record price to a leading streaming platform.
The ‘mass’ entertainer, scripted by Udaykrishna and directed by B Unnikrishnan, revolves around Mohanlal’s character Neyyattinkara Gopan who arrives at a village in Palakkad to broker a deal for the residents, but ends up creating more trouble than they bargained for. The movie also has Shraddha Srinath, Ramachandra Raju, Sidhique, Nedumudi Venu, Johny Antony, Rachana Narayanankutty, Swasika, Saikumar and Dhruvan as part of its cast.
Unnikrishnan has always maintained that the movie was meant for a theatrical release and despite multiple offers for streaming platforms for a direct-to-OTT release, th e filmmakers hasn’t entertained these. This despite the movie being made on a whopping budget exceeding Rs 30 crore and the shoot being completed in March 2021.
We have now learnt that the OTT rights for the movie has been bagged by Amazon Prime Video. The platform had also bought the streaming rights for Priyadarshan and Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham and Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam 2, which was the superstar’s first direct-to-OTT release.
Considering that Unnikrishnan, who has also co-produced Aaraattu, approached the theatre exhibitor’s body, Federation of Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK), earlier this month to ensure that the film gets a decent run even after its two-week holdover period, the movie is not expected to hit the streaming platform till the last week of March.
Incidentally, Mohanlal’s next collaboration with Jeethu Joseph – 12th Man – will also be a direct-to-OTT release. A source from the team told OTTplay that the makers have signed a deal with Disney+ Hotstar for its release. Mohanlal’s Bro Daddy too had dropped on Disney+ Hotstar in January.
