Mohanlal was reportedly approached to play the investigative officer while the Malayankunju star has been in discussions to essay the role of the kingpin of the heist operation
Mollywood is all set to get another heist thriller that could feature two of its biggest stars – Mohanlal and Fahadh Faasil - in a battle of wits. The makers of the upcoming movie, which is based on the infamous Chelembra Bank Robbery case of 2007, are reportedly in discussions with Mohanlal and Fahadh Faasil to play the leads of the film.
The robbery that took place on New Year’s Eve of 2007 resulted in the four culprits getting away with 80 kg gold and over Rs 25 lakh. It was among the most sensational cases cracked by the Kerala Police, which took almost two months, a search spanning five cities in the country and frequent changes in the investigation heads, to finally catch the robbers.
Fahadh Faasil has been eyed to play the kingpin of the operation named Jaison aka Babu, while Mohanlal is in advanced discussions to play the police officer P Vijayan, who had headed the investigation that involved monitoring two million phone calls and seeking help from mobile service providers as well as software engineers – all of which were unprecedented 15 years ago. About 80% of the loot including 52kg of gold was recovered by the cops from the criminals, who were nabbed from Kozhikode, during the frantic search that lasted for 57 days.
Incidentally, the robbery was inspired by John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan’s Dhoom, according to a report in DNA, where police officer KS Jangpangi during a media briefing soon after the criminals were apprehended had said that Jaison had taken cue from the Bollywood film.
Mohanlal and Fahadh had earlier teamed up for Red Wine though they didn’t share screen space with each other. The veteran superstar launched the book India’s Money Heist: The Chelembra Bank Robbery last week at a function in Kochi, where it was also confirmed that the book’s movie rights in several languages were sold.
