The superstar, who will next be seen in Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, also talked about the release status of Shaji Kailas’ Alone and Vysakh’s Monster
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal put to rest all the controversies surrounding the OTT releases of his upcoming movies on Tuesday. The actor, who was speaking at a press meet in Kochi ahead of the release of his big-budget period film Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, confirmed which of his movies are heading for direct-to-OTT releases.
Earlier this month, producer Antony Perumbavoor, after the discussions with the theatre exhibitors had failed, announced that five of Mohanlal’s films that he has produced – Priyadarshan’s Marakkar, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Bro Daddy, Jeethu Joseph’s 12th Man, Shaji Kailas’ Alone and Vysakh’s Monster – will release directly on OTTs.
While the producer later reverted that decision and decided to release Marakkar in theatres, he did not talk about the rest of the films. Mohanlal, however, clarified that they had never signed a deal to release Marakkar on OTTs first. This was done after its theatrical release was signed. Amazon Prime Video seems to have grabbed its post-theatrical streaming rights.
The actor also confirmed that Bro Daddy, which has him starring along with Prithviraj, will be an OTT release along with 12th Man. “These movies were made for OTTs and we can’t ask them to return the rights now,” he said.
On the status of Alone and Monster, the superstar said that they were made keeping an OTT release in mind but the final call will be taken only after gauging the situation of theatres. He confirmed that as of now only Bro Daddy and 12th Man are confirmed for direct-to-OTT releases. Disney+ Hotstar has been rumoured to have picked up the rights of Bro Daddy while Amazon Prime Video has reportedly sealed the deal for 12th Man.
Apart from Marakkar, Mohanlal also has B Unnikrishnan’s Aaraattu set for a theatrical release on February 10.
