Mohanlal's big directorial debut Barroz recently made its OTT premiere on Disney+ Hotstar after a lacklustre run at the theatres. Some hardcore fans of the Malayalam superstar were hoping that the movie could find some love and appreciation from the OTT audience. However, the netizens’ reactions on Twitter and Reddit indicate that the fortunes of Barroz haven’t changed for the better. Here’s how netizens have been reacting to Mohanlal’s Barroz online...

Mohanlal’s Barroz draws negative reactions

Along with direction, Mohanlal also starred in Barroz, which was released on Disney+ Hotstar on January 22, 2025. The 3D children’s fantasy movie revolves around Barroz who is entrusted to protect Da Gama’s treasure until the rightful heir returns.

Despite being made on a big budget and having technical experts from across the world, Barroz failed to create magic on screen. Instead what it earned was a slew of criticisms, that were mainly directed at the leading man, hailed as The Complete Actor.

After watching the movie or sitting through the initial parts, fans seem to be in disbelief. Taking to social media, one netizen wrote: “Can't believe a fine actor has been reduced to doing this...”. Another netizen wrote that they stopped watching Barroz after 10 minutes. Take a look at some of the other reactions on Twitter:

Reactions are not much different in the Reddit sub ‘Barroz brainrot’ where people were left wondering who directed the movie!

“People are blaming the actor and the producer. People, who directed this again?” read one comment.

Yet another netizen wrote, “With all due respects to Mohanlal, didnt anyone see through this in preview or editing . How can someone allow this frame to be released. None told/advised Lalettan ?”

After some scenes from the movie found their way online, netizens found it hard to believe it was part of Barroz. “This has gotta be fake cmoonn... You're telling me these are real clips from the movie????!!” one user wrote on Reddit.

Technical aspects of the movie were also called out with cinematography by Santosh Sivan and color grading also drawing flak.

"Why is the cinematography so bad? Wasn't santhosh shivan behind the camera for this film? Looks like an asianet serial," read one comment.

Fans pin hope on L2 Empuraan

Even as Barroz drew flak, some die-hard fans exuded hope that Mohanlal’s fortunes at the box office would change with the release of L2 Empuraan.

The second part in the Lucifer trilogy, directed by Prithviraj and starring Mohanlal, will be released on March 27, 2025.

Mohanlal’s other much-anticipated 2025 release is Thudarum which reunites him with Shobana on screen after a hiatus. The film, directed by Tharun Moorthy, was slated to release on January 30, 2025, but the latest reports claim that the movie will not be released this month.
