Ace Tamil poet and lyricist Pulamaipithan passed away on Wednesday morning at 9.30am. He was 85. Pulamaipithan was admitted to Fortis Malar Hospital last week on account of ill health. However, his health deteriorated and was on life support, until this morning. His demise is a tragic loss for the Tamil film Industry. He was the former Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council. Apart from this, he was also a close associate of AIADMK founder and late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran.

In his illustrious career spanning multiple decades, Pulamaipithan penned hundreds of Tamil chartbusters. He was also the Arasavai Kavignar (poet laureate) of the TN Legislative Council during the tenure of MGR. He was honoured with the Periyar Award by the Tamil Nadu Government and supported the cause of the Eelam Tamils.

Pulamaipithan penned lyrics for most mainstream actors of the Tamil film industry. Multitude of actors like MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Kamal Haasan had the opportunity to lip sync to his lyrics in a number of chartbuster tracks, like Naan Yaar Nee Yaar and Aayiram Nilave Vaa (from MGR’s Kudiyirntha Kovil and Adimai Penn), Thenpaandi Cheemayile and Nee Oru Kaadhal Sangeetham (from Kamal Haasan’s Nayakan), among many others, which remain crowd favourites. His most recent venture was Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri, for which he penned the soulful track of Thaaimai.
