Meenakshi Sundareshwar: Teaser starring Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani, receives criticism for stereotypes

Bollywood often receives flak for its stereotypical narrative of various characters and cultures in its movies. Especially while coming to the depiction of South Indian culture, the Hindi language movies are often slammed for depicting it through a generalised and narrow viewpoint. The recent film to face this is Meenakshi Sundareshwar which has been facing the fury of audiences since the release of its teaser.

The teaserr of the Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani starrer was released lately, and netizens took to social media to express their displeasure. The trailer showcasing Tamil culture, makes many stereotypical references like all South Indians being Rajinikanth fans, playing kuthu songs (fast beat songs), and all South Indians being vegetarians.

Many of the audience were enraged by the portrayal and marked their opinions on the comment section and Twitter. One of the users thinks Bollywood making films on South Indians is the same as Hollywood making one on Indians. The other one feels this as stereotyping at its best and slammed against the references which include picturing South Indians as pretentious English speaking people. There are also disappointments for not choosing even one South Indian actor to play the role of a South Indian.
