Disney CEO Bob Chapek has disclosed during a Disney quarterly earnings call that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be available exclusively in cinemas for 45 days. But after its theatrical run, the American superhero film drawn from the Marvel Comics character Shang-Chi that created a buzz among Marvel fans will probably be released on Disney+, and then Disney+ Hotstar, in October.
The Simu-Liu-starrer is slated for a worldwide premiere on September 3. But the release date for the film in India hasn’t been announced yet. But as the word has it, the film could drop on Disney+ (and Disney+ Hotstar) earliest on October 18. However, this is just a speculated date as the premiere date for Shang-Chi on The Disney+ Hotstar hasn’t been decided yet, given that a lot of it depends on Disney India's big screen plans for the superhero flick.

The decision to stand firm on having an exclusive theatrical premiere for Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings even in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases in the US due to the Delta variant is a bold move especially, considering that the other studios have stayed or postponed their comic book adaptations. Sony Pictures has postponed the release of Venom: Let There be Carnage to October. But Chapek cleared the air by saying that the decision is made now to honour ‘distribution agreements’, and that it was too late to go back on the move. He further added that the Disney team thinks it to be ‘an interesting experiment’, with only a window of 45 days to run the film in theatres. Due to the Covid-19 situation, the marketplace is uncertain too, so all they can do is take up business decisions at the point in time as needed while valuing ‘commitment and flexibility’, said the makers.
But ardent fans of the MCU universe have criticised Disney’s move of premiering the movie only in cinemas first.
