Varun Tej in Matka

Matka is Varun Tej's new film that hit the screens on November 14, 2024. Directed by Karuna Kumar, the film features Meenakshi Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi in key roles. There was very low buzz for Matka from the beginning, and the same continued on the day of its release as the film opened with just 40% occupancy in the Telugu states.

Matka's latest three day collections are here

Things turned upside down when the film received negative reviews across the globe. With low occupancy and poor word-of-mouth, Matka made only Rs. 70 lakhs at the box office on its first day. Day 2 was worse, as the film earned just Rs. 65 lakhs. The third day, being a holiday, was the highest, with collections reaching Rs. 80 lakhs. This brought the film's total first-weekend collection to Rs. 2.1 crore. These shockingly low numbers highlight the extent of Matka's failure.

Some theaters in the Telugu states have not even recovered their basic electricity expenses. Despite having a strong story, the film suffered from silly narration and a lack of thrills. Varun Tej's performance has been the only saving grace, earning praise, while the rest of the film has been heavily criticized.

Matka's OTT release update

Amazon Prime Video has secured the digital rights to the film, and reports suggest that Matka will be available for streaming within two weeks of its release. With Matka, Varun Tej's last three films have turned out to be massive box-office flops. He urgently needs to reconsider his script choices and collaborate with directors who can showcase him more effectively.

In the period drama, Varun Tej played the role of a Matka king and was presented superbly, but unfortunately, audiences have outright rejected the film in theaters. Karuna Kumar has disappointed yet again, squandering the massive opportunity provided by Varun Tej.

It remains to be seen what project Varun Tej picks next. For now, Matka is already out of several theaters and is expected to crash completely by Monday. Stay tuned for more updates.
