Marvel’s move to promote its new series witnessed some impassioned responses from Sam Wilson fans.
A move by Marvel ahead of the premiere of its inaugural animated series What If has led to feelings of discontent from die-hard Sam Wilson fans. The official Twitter handle of Captain America, which had previously displayed the picture of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, changed its profile picture to feature the What If…? version of Agent Carter, who will reportedly take on the role of the star-spangled hero in the series. The promotional move, however, did not go down well among fans.
Twitter witnessed a clamour of tweets criticizing the move with the hashtags #SamWilson and #CaptainAmerica gaining traction. The social media platform became flooded with clips and pictures featuring Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of the hero. Some fans believed that Marvel could have found a better way of promoting their upcoming series without having to remove Wilson’s name from the handle. And yet others adamantly said that Sam Wilson will always be their Captain America.
In the final episode of the Disney+Hotstar series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,(spoilers ahead) it was revealed that Sam Wilson, who had previously donned the metal-winged Falcon suit would finally step into the shoes and suit of America’s favourite hero after an elderly Steve Rogers had passed down the shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Following the finale of the series, Marvel’s official Captain America Twitter page had reflected this change in the MCU by changing its profile to depict Sam Wilson’s new avatar as the captain. This was welcomed by the Twitterverse. But it seems that Marvel’s attempt to replicate its previous fan approved decision boomeranged onto them.
