Mark Antony: Retro references in the Vishal and SJ Suryah action entertainer

Vishal's much-awaited Mark Antony has just hit screens and the film has opened to some positive reviews from the critics. Mark Antony is being billed as the comeback film of Vishal, who has been looking for a massive hit after a series of dampeners. The film has many references to the films of the '70s and '90s as it is set in the era. Here's a look at some of them.

Silk Smitha
The film marks the return of the iconic actress and dancer Silk Smitha. The scene was quite a hit when the trailer of the film dropped and a glimpse of Silk Smitha was provided. In the film, SJ Suryah's character is seen quite fixated with the actress and he also breaks into an impromptu gig on meeting her.

Tribute to Mark Antony
The film's title is a tribute to Raghuvaran, who played the iconic villain in Superstar Rajinikanth's Baashha, which was helmed by Suresh Krissna. Mark Antony is considered one of the most breakthrough characters among villains in Tamil cinema. His character is so popular that even today, his reference is made when names of popular villains are rolled out. The film also shows a clip from Baashha onscreen.

Panju Mittai, Vilagu Vilagu and Kannai Nambathey
Mark Antony uses a number of retro songs to his credit, with the song Panju Mittai from Ettupatti Raasa, dominating the scenes. Every time the song plays on screens, the gangsters break into a full-bloom war with each other and it's blazing with guns everywhere. Kamal Haasan's Varuthu Varuthu Vilagu Vilagu, too, plays out in full throttle during the action and dance sequences. Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, too, makes an entry.

Amaravathi to Vidaamuyarchi
The film doesn't shy away from using ample references to films of SJ Suryah as a director. Be it Vaali, Kushi or even Anbe Aaaruyire, the names of the ace director's films are thrown around in casual manner. Adhik Ravichandran, who is a big fan of Ajith, has made references to the actor, right from his first film, Amaravathi to his upcoming film, Vidaamuyarchi.
