This has escalated expectations on the film which is releasing on June 29,
Mari Selvaraj, Kamal Haasan in Thevar Magan and a poster of Maamannan
Maamannan, starring Udhayanidhi in the lead, is the most-expected Tamil film of this month. The movie helmed by Mari Selvaraj is hitting screens on June 29. The presence of Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh apart from music by AR Rahman are a few reasons why many cinephiles have been looking forward to the project.
At the audio launch of the movie which was held earlier this month, Mari took a pot shot at the blockbuster film Thevar Magan, starring Kamal Haasan, which was released three decades ago. He said that the caste glorification in it was one of the reasons which made him come up with a project like Maamannan which speaks for the oppressed sections.
Interestingly, Kamal was the chief guest for the event which was telecast on Sun TV a few days ago. Mari's harsh criticism of the cult film hasn't gone down well with fans of the Ulaganayagan. They started trolling him on Twitter accusing that the three-film old director is yet to comprehend the essence of Thevar Magan.
Hardcore fans of Kamal also heaped praise on their matinee idol for accepting Mari's comment in a sportive manner at the event, and went gaga over his generousity.
Many clips from Thevar Magan started doing the rounds on social media and netizens are divided on whether the film glorified casteism or not. Kamal fans started trending the hashtag #TamilsPrideThevarmagan and explained what the movie's climax tried to explain and pointed out that Mari interpreted it in a wrong manner.
However, there are those who opine that Thevar Magan did influence a few in a politically incorrect manner and that Mari's courage to criticize the film at the event in the presence of Kamal should be appreciated.
