Malayalam star Unni Mukundan confirmed that Marco directed by Haneef Adeni, will be developed into a trilogy.
There’s more violent bloodshed in store from the world of Marco. Unni Mukundan, the lead actor of the latest Malayalam movie Marco, has confirmed that his film will have two more installments and recently shared an update on the release plans of the sequel.
The film, which is helmed by Haneef Adeni, hit theatres on December 20 and has already gone on to become a raging youth, especially among its target audience of adults in the age group of 18 and 35-year-old males. Marco's worldwide box office gross exceeding Rs 35 crore in four days is proof of that.
For the uninitiated, Marco was a character from Haneef’s 2019 movie Mikhael, which had Nivin Pauly in the lead. The film had Unni essaying the role of the villain. While the commonalities end there, the latest film, which is rated A for its violence, explores Marco’s story in which he is portrayed as an anti-hero who goes on a revenge spree after the murder of his brother by a faction of a gold syndicate.
The movie ends with a tease of a sequel, and Unni, in a recent interaction with media post the screening of the movie, confirmed that the team has plans to release two more movies from the Marco franchise, which is planned as a trilogy.
On when the viewers can expect the release of the sequel, Unni said, “It will take at least two years. I have a few other commitments that I need to complete and Haneef too will be working on other projects before we regroup.”
The film, which is made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, has already grossed more than Rs 35 crore in the first four days and is expected to break into the Rs 50 crore club during Christmas.
Unni already has a film in the Rs 100 crore club Malikappuram – which incidentally also released in theatres in December. Interestingly, that movie was supposed to have a sequel. Its writer Abhilash Pillai recently said that he hopes to work on the film’s sequel or marry Malikappuram’s characters with another bigger idea revolving around Sabarimala and Pampa in the future.
