Ajith Kumar, the popular actor, had one of the biggest blockbusters of his acting career with Mankatha. The Venkat Prabhu directorial, which was released in 2011, portrayed the star in a negative role. After the re-release fever hit the Tamil film industry amidst its ongoing dry phase, the Ajith fans and theatre owners have been requesting the makers of Mankatha to release the film once again in theatres. However, the viewers who wish to revisit the film right away, can always watch it on OTT.
Mankatha deserves a wide re-release; Here’s why
The Venkat Prabhu directorial is unarguably one of the bravest commercial films ever produced in Tamil cinema. Mankatha successfully reinvented Ajith Kumar – the actor who has been getting restricted to mundane ‘Mr. Goody Two Shoes’ roles in mindless masala flicks. The Tamil cinema finally had a chance to meet the ‘star actor’ Ajith, who they have met in the iconic film Vaalee, years back. It is indeed a great time to re-release Mankatha, as it might remind the actor, who has once again restricted himself to the boring tropes of commercial cinema’s might hero yet again, of his immense capabilities as a performer.
Along with celebrating the good-looking star, Venkat Prabhu’s Mankatha also featured his seamless transformation as Vinayak Mahadevan, the anti-hero with almost no redeeming qualities. Mankatha is one of those rare Tamil films in which the hero is unapologetically grey. Along with Ajith, the stellar star cast including senior actor Arjun Sarja and many others shined in well-defined roles, unlike most of the present-day commercial films. This well-made action thriller film, which is enhanced further with Yuvan Shankar Raja’s iconic music score, deserves to be watched on big screens yet again.

Mankatha on Sun NXT
Even though the reports on the Mankatha re-release have been doing rounds on social media these days, the makers have not officially confirmed the same yet. But here is the good news for the audiences, who are eagerly waiting to revisit Venkat Prabhu’s blockbuster action thriller. The much-loved film, which featured Ajith Kumar in the role of a corrupted police officer named ACP Vinayak Mahadevan IPS, is now available for streaming on Sun NXT and OTTPlay Premium.

Mankatha at the box office
Mankatha, which hit the big screens on August 31, 2011, had a massive opening at the worldwide box office. The Ajith Kumar starrer emerged as the second all-time highest box office opener of that time, after Rajinikanth’s Enthiran. The Venkat Prabhu directorial, which completed 50 days at the theatres across the globe, reportedly collected over Rs. 100 crore within its lifetime run. The movie was ranked as the second all-time highest grosser of Tamil cinema. In case a worldwide re-release happens, Mankatha will definitely make an excellent box office collection, yet again.
