It looks like Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan is now being endorsed by schools as well. A movie hall in Coimbatore had recently organised a special show of the film in an attempt to teach students history. Mani Ratnam's historical fiction is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel of the same name. The five-part novel was penned during the 1950s and is considered one of the most revered works in the history of Tamil literature. The novel revolves around the battle for the Chola throne and the early days of Ponniyin Selvan, who later goes on to become one of the most popular kings in the history of India, Raja Raja Cholan I. The film's makers shared the same on their social media page.

Even as the film runs for the third week in a row in theatres, its gradually inching towards Rs 500 crore collection. The screens have now been reduced after the arrival of two Diwali releases- Karthi's spy thriller Sardar and Sivakarthikeyan's romantic comedy Prince. The film has an ensemble star cast with Vikram playing Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan, Trisha essaying the role of Ilaiya Piratti Kundavai, Jayam Ravi playing Arulmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vandhiyathevan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandhini Devi.

The supporting cast comprises Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shobita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Rahman, Jayaram, Ashwin Kakumanu, Vikram Prabhu to name a few. Music for the film is by AR Rahman. While the cinematography is by Ravi Varman, Thotta Tharani has handled the art direction and A Sreekar Prasad is in charge of the editing. The film has been jointly bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions and hit screens on September 30 worldwide in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. The second part of the film is likely to hit screens in mid - 2023.
