Anirban Bhattacharya’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Mandaar has taken the Bengali entertainment industry by storm. The web series that marks the much-awaited and talked about directorial debut of ace actor Anirban Bhattacharya will have its digital premiere. The series is co-written by him.
Who are the cast and crew of Mandaar?
Sohini Sarkar will be seen as Laili (Lady Macbeth), Debasish Mondal as Mandaar (Macbeth), Debesh Roy Chowdhury as Dablu Bhai (King Duncan), Anirban Bhattacharya as Muqaddar Mukherjee, Sankar Debnath as Bonka (Banquo), Lokenath Dey as Modon (Macduff), Diganta as Moncha (Malcolm) and Korak Samanta as Fontus (Fleance). Anirban has written the story along with Pratik Kumar Dutta and Rudrarup Mukhopadhyay. Soumik Haldar has cranked the camera. Adeep Singh Manki and Anindit Roy have done the sound design. Sanglap Bhowmick has edited the footage.

The familiar tale of Macbeth and its universal themes of fate, lust for power, betrayal, greed, jealousy is recast in the piscine world of Geilpur, reinterpreting the characters in the four-episode web series. It is set in the contemporary time and in the distinct, colloquial, cultural milieu of the coastal land. The trailer of the promising web series drops enough symbols, signifiers, and motifs for one to anticipate a profound, dark and unsettling thriller, waiting to be lapped up by the world.

What does Anirban Bhattacharya have to say?
The Dracula Sir actor told Cinestaan that he underwent a ‘rollercoaster of emotions and a surge of excitement and fear while taking up the bard’s world-famous play as the subject of his maiden directorial project and feels grateful to have been able to pull it off. The series has been put under the category ‘World Classics’ on Hoichoi, as part of a line-up of new titles in season 5 of the popular streaming platform.
