Directed by The Great Indian Kitchen fame Jeo Baby, Kaathal The Core, which pairs Mammootty with Jyothika, is a family drama centered on a hard-hitting subject
Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s next, Kaathal The Core will be in theatres this Thursday, November 23. Produced by the actor, with The Great Indian Kitchen fame Jeo Baby in the director’s chair, the film is based on a script by Paulson Skaria and Adarsh Sukumaran and brings Jyothika back to Malayalam cinema. Described as a family drama the film explores the relationship dynamics of Mathew Devassy (Mammotty) and his wife Omana (Jyothika), after she files for divorce citing cruelty, at a time when he is contesting a local body election.
More recently, it was revealed that Omana’s ‘cruelty’ allegation does not stem from domestic abuse, but from the fact that Mathew has been a closet homosexual over the years, maintaining a relationship with a ‘special friend’. While this affects his political plans, Mathew denies this allegation. How society reacts to this ‘revelation’ and the dynamics of Mathew and Omana’s relationship forms the crux of the movie.
This was part of a synopsis of the film that was widely circulated on social media, which saw netizens lauding Mammootty for being a part of such a revolutionary subject at this stage of his career. While the team has not openly confirmed the veracity of the synopsis or the LGBTQI angle in the story, the fact that the film has now been banned in a couple of Middle East countries gives credence to this theory. Jyothika’s husband, actor Suriya had earlier tweeted in amazement at how easily Malayalam cinema handles sensitive subjects.

The film also stars Anagha Akku, Alex Alister, Joji Mundakayam, Adarsh Sukumaran, Lalu Alex, Chinnu Chandni, among others. The film has music by Mathews Pulickan and cinematography by Salu K Thomas.
