Despite the “deliberate attempts of degrading”, the makers of Mammootty’s latest theatrical release CBI 5: The Brain has claimed that the movie has gone on to rake in Rs 17 crore from box office earnings outside India within its first nine days of release.

The investigative thriller, which hit theatres worldwide on May 1, released in fewer centres outside India as compared to Mammootty’s record-breaking Bheeshma Parvam. However, its earnings so far are impressive considering that the movie had faced stiff competition from Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana, which also had a worldwide release on April 28 as well as several Eid releases across languages.

While the makers of CBI 5 and the fans of the megastar were hoping for another impressive run for a Mammootty film this year following Bheeshma Parvam’s success, that was not to be. One reason the makers pointed out, in a recent press conference, was that “deliberate attempts” at degrading the movie and pushing negative opinions about the film in the first few days of release.

The film’s director K Madhu and scriptwriter SN Swamy, however, said that the movie was able to weather the challenge and had the support of the family audience and especially women and that was the reason it is still running in theatres.

The movie, which marks the fifth instalment in the CBI Sethurama Iyer franchise, follows the protagonist and his team investigating the case of a series of murders referred to as basket killings. The case, which is among the toughest the iconic sleuth has faced yet, has him leaning on old and new allies to crack it open.

Also starring Asha Sharath, Dileesh Pothan, Anoop Menon, Soubin Shahir, Kaniha, Ramesh Pisharody, Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar and Renji Panicker, CBI 5 ends with a hint for another sequel. The film will be available to stream on Netflix after its theatrical run.
