The Pranchiyettan and the Saint duo will be collaborating again after five years for the upcoming Netflix anthology
Malayalam superstar Mammootty and director Ranjith, who had given the audience superhits such as Prachiyettan and the Saint and Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha, will be teaming up after a gap of five years for Netflix’s upcoming anthology.
The duo, who had last worked together in Puthenpanam in 2017, will be collaborating for the segment Kadugannawa Oru Yatra in the anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s short stories. The featurette is based on MT’s memoir and is a continuation of his short story Ninte Ormakku.
The memoir followed MT’s search for a girl, whom he had met in his childhood, while he went to Sri Lanka as part of his job as a journalist. Mammootty will be playing the character named PK Venugopal, who is based on MT himself.
The segment was earlier rumoured to be helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, who seemed to have dropped out. Lijo, who had already worked with Mammootty in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam earlier this year, will be teaming up with the megastar for another feature film later this year that will be produced by the megastar. Another leading actor will be part of the movie, as per reports. Ranjith and Mammootty’s short film is the final segment to be shot for the anthology.
Meanwhile, the Netflix anthology consists of nine segments helmed by eight directors. Priyadarshan is the only filmmaker to direct two featurettes – Shilalikhithangal with Biju Menon and Olavum Theeravum with Mohanlal. Shyamaprasad, Mahesh Narayanan, Jayaraj, Ashwathy Vasudevan Nair, Rathish Ambat and Santosh Sivan are the other directors.
The anthology comprises segments based on MT’s short stories such as Sherlock, Abhayam Thedi, Swargam Thurakkunna Samayam, Kazhcha and Vilpana. The anthology also boasts a stellar cast featuring the who’s who of Malayalam including Mammootty, Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Parvathy Thiruvothu and this year’s National Film Award-winners Biju Menon and Aparna Balamurali.
