The survival thriller, scripted and cinematographed by Mahesh Narayanan, is directed by Sajimon
Probably no other actor in Indian film industry has expanded his fan base as much as Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil did during the pandemic. The actor, through his OTT releases CU Soon, Joji, Malik and Irul, was arguably a key reason for audiences across the country tuning into Malayalam cinema the past two years. While he was part of Allu Arjun’s blockbuster Pushpa last year, the actor is now gearing up for his first Malayalam theatrical release after more than two years.
Fahadh, whose last Malayalam movie to hit theatres was Anwar Rasheed’s Trance, is set for the release of Malayankunju, which was initially slated to hit theatres in February and was postponed due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the State.
Reports now suggest that the film, which is produced by veteran director Fazil, will release in theatres worldwide on May 19. There has not been an official confirmation regarding this yet, but if Malayankunju does release on the reported date, it will go up against Nivin Pauly and Asif Ali’s time-travel fantasy drama that is eyeing a May 20 release.
Malayankunju marks Fahadh’s third collaboration with Mahesh Narayanan in the past three years. While Mahesh had helmed C U Soon and Malik, he has scripted and cranked the camera for the upcoming film, which is directed by debutant Sajimon.
On the movie, Sajimon had earlier told OTTplay that it’s a pertinent survival thriller based on a man who gets trapped in a landslide. Fahadh plays a rustic youth who repairs electronics in the movie, which also has Rajisha Vijayan, Jaffer Idukki, Indrans and a host of relative newcomers as part of its cast.
Meanwhile, Fahadh has also completed shooting for Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, which has Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi as part of its lead cast, and the first schedule of Mari Selvaraj’s Maamannan.
