Malayalee From India – Director Dijo Jose Antony was accused by writer Nishad Koya of copying his screenplay.
This week marks the OTT release of Malayalee From India, the most recent Malayalam movie. But how many of you were aware that Nivin Pauly's film was in the news for some time prior to its premiere because of a plagiarism dispute?
Malayalee From India, directed by Dijo Jose Antony, was accused by writer Nishad Koya of copying his screenplay, which was originally meant for a project under the direction of Joshiy. Jayasurya was slated to play the lead in the said project. A fierce debate has been sparked by the accusation, with both sides adamantly defending their positions. Nishad is known for his films - Ordinary, Shikkari Shambhu and Thoppil Jopan.
A day ahead of Malayalee From India's theatrical release, Nishad made a post on Facebook in which he revealed the movie's plot, sparking off a controversy. The cast and crew of the comedy-drama, including Nivin Pauly, Dijo, and Listin, denied Nishad's accusations during the movie's promotion and a press meet held afterward.
Listin criticised the writer for his actions, saying that the movie had been publicised well in advance and that he ought to have taken his complaints to the appropriate authorities rather than using social media.
Actor Hareesh Peradi intervened in the meantime to defend screenwriter Nishad Koya, saying the latter made the proper choice. Only someone who is positive that the truth has been altered would speak up, he continued, especially in the days leading up to the movie's premiere.
Those who missed the film on the big screen are eager for its digital release, despite the film's dismal box office and theatrical performance. It has been confirmed that the film, which features prominent performances by Nivin Pauly and Dhyan Sreenivasan, will be accessible for streaming on SonyLIV starting on July 5. It is reasonable to assume that the film's underwhelming box office performance and the conflicting reviews it received following its theatrical release are what led to the delay in OTT release.
