Budding director Anil Raju is on board to direct Udumbu's Telugu remake
Noted producer Gangapatnam Sridhar has acquired the Telugu remake rights of the popular Malayalam film Udumbu. The producer, who backed a wide variety of films in the past including Anjali-starrer Chitrangada, Sumanth's thriller Idam Jagath, Charmme's Manthra and Mangala had also remade Raj Tarun's hit film Kumari 21 F in Kannada earlier.
Udumbu, directed and produced by Kannan Thamarakkulam under KT Movie House, starring Priyanka Sreelakshmi, Hareesh Peradi and Senthil Krishna, turned out to be a surprise hit at the theatres despite not releasing amid great expectations. While several filmmakers from the Telugu industry expressed their interest to acquire the remake rights of Udumbu, Gangapatnam Sridhar conveyed his happiness about the deal working in his favour.
The Udumbu remake, to be bankrolled under Sri Vighnesh Karthik Cinema, is set to go on floors soon and will be directed by Ratnakaram Anil Raju, a first-time filmmaker. The team is currently reworking the script of Udumbu to suit the tastes of Telugu audiences and a solid cast, crew are being roped in for the same. Meanwhile, John Abraham is part of the Hindi remake of Udumbu already and the Tamil remake will also launch a veteran actor's son into films.
Malayalam remakes are increasingly finding takers in the Telugu industry in the recent past, be it the Drushyam series (remake of Drishyam and Drishyam 2), Bheemla Nayak (remake of Ayyappanum Koshiyum) or Godfather (the remake of Lucifer). The producer is hoping that the popularity of Malayalam cinema among Telugu audiences will also work in his favour. Apart from the Udumbu remake, Gangapatnam Sridhar is currently also working on Sivagami, a film starring Ramyakrishna.
