Malaikottai Vaaliban is the ‘good risk’ from Mohanlal we waited for – Here's why
Mohanlal in Malaikottai Vaaliban

Mohanlal is now set to begin a new and exciting phase of his acting career, with some promising projects in his kitty. With the massive success of his latest outing Neru, the Malayalam superstar has finally put an end to the long low phase in his acting career. However, it is Malaikottai Vaaliban, the upcoming movie helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, that left the cine-goers supremely excited.

Interestingly, the audience still has absolutely no clue about what the actor-director duo is cooking with the highly anticipated film, which is touted to be a period fantasy drama. The official teaser and the songs of the film that were released recently suggest that Lijo Jose’s film is going to be a unique cinematic experience. But it is safe to say that Malaikottai Vaaliban is a ‘good risk’ from Mohanlal, both creatively and commercially.

Mohanlal’s collaboration with Lijo Jose Pellissery

Well, Malaikottai Vaaliban came as a big surprise for the film fanatics, who are well aware of how Mohanlal’s illustrious career has been moving forward for the past few years. Apart from the blockbuster Lucifer, the brilliant Drishyam 2, and the entertaining Bro Daddy, no other films managed to satisfy the cine-goers who love the superstar, until Neru was released in December 2023.

The audiences even started believing it was impossible for Mohanlal to take up a massive challenge at this point of his career, where he has been considered the most bankable star in the industry. But, things began to change the moment the veteran actor announced his next collaboration with Lijo Jose Pellissery, one of the finest filmmakers of contemporary Malayalam cinema. Even this career move from Mohanlal came as a big surprise, as the superstar hardly collaborated with new-age filmmakers of Malayalam cinema before.

Why Malaikottai Vaaliban is a ‘good risk’ for Mohanlal?

Now, after the releases of some highly promising posters, official teaser, and songs, we know that Malaikottai Vaaliban is indeed a ‘good risk’ for Mohanlal as both an actor and a star. The promo materials confirm that Lijo Jose Pellissery is set to place the National Award winner in a never-seen-before space while celebrating his larger-than-life onscreen persona. But still, the film is expected to have a strong foundation, thanks to the unmatched creative mind of director Lijo.

It is the Mohanlal we have never seen before – from the top knot to the not-so-new long beard, to the massive arm tattoo to the statement silver hasli necklace, everything about his look in the film is so refreshing and unfamiliar. The title Malaikottai Vaaliban and the title design that featured a massive moustache did give the impression of a familiar space. But what followed, was simply unexpected. Mohanlal in a complete experimental film, is what the actor’s fans were dreaming of for a long time. But here, it is also assured that Malaikottai Vaaliban is not a pure experiment but a well-planned and executed commercial film.

If Malaikottai Vaaliban emerges as a major critical and commercial success, it is going to change the course of Mohanlal’s 46-year-long career in a big way. It hopefully might inspire the superstar, who has been shying away from experiments for the past few years, to make some bold film choices. It might even save the supremely talented actor, from the clutches of endless forgettable ‘Agent’ roles in half-baked and bizarre commercial potboilers. So, it is a ‘good risk’ that is hopefully going to pay off in a big way. Well, we will have to wait till January 25, 2024, to know what Lijo Jose Pellissery's film has in store for us.
