Malaikottai Vaaliban, the Mohanlal starrer emerged as the seventh biggest box office opener of Malayalam cinema. But the period film is now struggling to perform well.
Mohanlal teamed up with acclaimed filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery for his latest outing, Malaikottai Vaaliban. The Malayalam superstar played the titular character in the movie, which is a period fantasy drama. As reported earlier, Malaikottai Vaaliban made a massive opening at the box office by collecting around Rs. 12.2 crore on its release day. However, things went downhill for the movie after Day 1, owing to the polarizing reviews from the audience.
As per the recent updates, the Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial has witnessed further dip in its collections on Day 4, which was also its first Sunday at the theatres. However, Malaikottai Vaaliban has now reportedly managed to cross the Rs. 20 crore mark at the worldwide box office.
The latest updates from the trade experts suggest that the Mohanlal starrer has finally crossed the Rs 20 crore mark at the box office, within the first 4 days of its release. Malaikottai Vaaliban made a total collection of over Rs. 20 crore at the worldwide box office when it completed its first weekend at the theatres. However, it is not an impressive figure, considering the period fantasy film was made with a massive budget of over Rs. 60 crore.
Malaikottai Vaaliban has reportedly witnessed a major dip in its Kerala collections, when it completed the first weekend of release. The latest reports by Sacnilk suggest that the Mohanlal starrer just made around Rs. 1.25 crore on its first Sunday at the theatres. The period drama also managed to cross the Rs. 10 crore mark finally, after the first 4 days of its release.
This is a heavily disappointing figure, considering the movie released with massive pre-release hype, and stars the biggest crowd-puller of the industry in the lead role. The recent updates suggest that the Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial just had around 20 percent occupancy on its first Sunday at the theatres. If things proceed at the same rate, Malaikottai Vaaliban might end up as one of the most disappointing outings of Malayalam cinema in recent times.
