Malaikottai Vaaliban had a grand release in theatres worldwide on January 25, much to the delight of Mohanlal's fans and movie buffs across the country as they celebrated the actor's first work with director Lijo Jose Pellissery. Regarded as one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, it was expected that Mohanlal would score another hit film after his courtroom drama, Neru.

According to a Sacnilk report, the period drama grossed about Rs 5.50 crore on its first day of release in India, with 51.23% occupancy in Malayalam shows in theatres. Even though the morning and second shows were more popular, the evening screenings were also very well attended.
In New Delhi, the Malayalam version of Malaikottai Vaaliban likewise had a significant occupancy rate of 54.75%.
Even so, the early morning fans' show praised the film's performances as well as the director's creativity and style of filmmaking. By the end of the day, many expressed their dissatisfaction with the lag in the film.
Many of the actor’s fans lauded the filmmaker for giving Mohanlal such a powerful character. In the meantime, some helmed the film to be a “perfect Lijo Jose Pellissery film” rather than a Mohanlal flick.
With just pre-release ticket sales, the movie brought in approximately Rs 4 crore. Additionally, it has outperformed the pre-release collections of Bheshma Parvam by Mammootty and King of Kotha by Dulquer Salmaan.
In Kerala, Vijay's Leo has the greatest pre-sales record with over Rs 13 crore. A lot of advance reservations were also made for Nelson Dilipkumar's Jailer, Beast, and Yash's KGF 2 in the state.
