Amit Sharma, who has directed Ajay Devgn's Maidaan, has opened up about people comparing his film to Shah Rukh Khan's hit 2007 film Chak De India. Here's what the director said in a recent interview.
Filmmaker Amit Sharma is ready for the release of his upcoming film, Maidaan. Starring Ajay Devgn and Priyamani in the lead roles, the film is based on the life of former Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Before Maidaan's theatrical release, director Amit Sharma had said that there were no similarities between his movie and Shah Rukh Khan's 2007 hit Chak De India. The filmmaker also added that Maidaan is not a sports biopic.
In an interview with India Today, Amit Sharma was asked about the comparisons being made between Maidaan and Chak De India. The filmmaker said that people tend to compare sports films because of the story of a coach and players. He believes people assume that it is a similar film even before watching it.
"There are no similarities between these films, except maybe 22 players are running after one ball on the field. The story is different, and the struggle is different," he said. Amit further mentioned that Maidaan is about Syed Abdul Rahim's emotional journey, while football is just the medium.
For the uninitiated, Maidaan revolves around the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, who was the Indian football coach from 1952 to 1962. Ajay Devgn will be seen as Rahim in the movie, while Priyamani will play the character of his wife, Saira. Gajraj Rao and Rudranil Ghosh are also integral parts of this film.
Maidaan is headed for a theatrical release on April 10, 2024 (Eid). The film will clash with Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff's Bade Miyan Chote Miyan at the box office. Both high-budget films are pitted against each other. While Maidaan is directed by Amit, BMCM has been helmed by Ali Abbas Zafar. However, it remains to be seen which film emerges as the box-office winner.
