The trailer of the much-awaited movie Maamannan was released on Friday. Filmmaker Mari Selvaraj has emerged as one of the most influential voices in the Tamil film industry and that sentiment resonates in the trailer. The trailer opens with Vadivelu saying that "he will keep repeating the same story over and over again, in search of ears willing to hear the truth." If you have followed Selvaraj's filmography, you know it's the director who's talking through his character.

Selvaraj made an impressive debut with Pariyerum Perumal and he followed that with Karnan, starring Dhanush in the lead. And both films talked about the prevalence of caste oppression in modern society. And Maamannan is no exception. Selvaraj is telling the same story but with new characters and new perceptions of the violence stemming from caste prejudices.

Judging from the trailer, it's safe to assume that Maamannan examines the brute oppression perpetrated in the name of caste and the politics that enable such cruel practices to thrive. And the trailer promises powerful performances from its cast, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh.

Fahadh Faasil seems to have taken on the role of an evil man in the movie. His character could be seen indulging in violence without a sense of guilt. There seems to be a touch of madness in that way he seeks power through the means of violence and corrupt politics. And Vadivelu contrasts Fahadh's character as a man who stands against violence. But, in the end, we see characters played by Vadivelu and Udhayanidhi primed and ready to go to battle.

If the trailer is anything to go by, Selvaraj is likely to deliver another memorable and powerful movie. Earlier, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan raved about the movie, expressing his desire for the movie to become a commercial hit.

"In events like this, we wouldn't have seen the movies but we usually wish that they should do well. I have seen this film. More important than wishing it a success, I desire to see it succeed. I am not just saying it because of my friendships (with the filmmakers). The voice in this film must be heard. The voice in this film doesn't just belong to Mari but to millions of people," Kamal Haasan said at the audio launch event.

Maamannan has a score from Oscar-winner AR Rahman. The movie is due in cinemas on June 26.
