Fahadh Faasil: I associate Maamanan director Mari Selvaraj with his concern for fellow human beings

Fahadh Faasil opens up about his Tamil movie Maamannan and working with Mari Selvaraj

It takes some great content or filmmakers to get Fahadh Faasil to move away from Malayalam and do a film in another language. KGF and Kantara makers couldn’t get him to work in Kannada and had to make it in Malayalam, but Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan director Mari Selvaraj was able to with Maamannan.

In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Fahadh opened up about why he decided to do the Tamil film, his fourth after Mohan Raja’s Velaikkaran, Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram.

“The world Mari opened to me was insane. It’s a part of the world that I wasn’t familiar with and that’s what made it a totally new experience for me,” says Fahadh, who essays the antagonist in the political drama that also has Udayanidhi Stalin, Keerthy Suresh and Vadivelu.

Further on his experience working in the movie as well as with the filmmaker, the Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum star says, “Everything comes out of your concern for human beings and that’s what I associate the most with Mari. As a human being, he’s worried about a lot of things and his films actually about a lot of that. I wanted to be part of that.”

While Fahadh had previously said that he has had trouble working in other languages as it doesn’t allow him to perform without inhibitions, this is his fourth Tamil movie. Is he more free now? “I am not at all free,” he says, immediately. “I still have language barriers and I totally depend on the writers and directors. I have hurdles and I am only doing it because the exercise is fun for me. I still don’t think in any other language than Malayalam. Personally, as an actor, it filters a lot when I have to think in a different language and then perform in another.”

Maamannan is set to hit theatres on June 29. Meanwhile, Fahadh’s Dhoomam, which released in Malayalam and Kannada on June 23, will also be dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu soon.
