The hit movie marks the last project of Udhay as an actor,
Udhay gifted a car to Mari recently
There were multiple reasons behind the hype surrounding Maamannan which hit screens on June 29. It marked the third project of Mari Selvaraj who impressed film buffs with Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan. AR Rahman's music was another factor. The inclusion of Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh and Udhayanidhi in the cast was more than what cinephiles could have asked for.
As if these reasons weren't enough, Udhay announced that the film would be his last outing as an actor, thanks to his political entry as the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports in Tamil Nadu.
The movie opened to decent response from critics and cinephiles, though many pointed out that the film is comparatively the weakest work of Mari. While the first half impressed everyone, the second half was slightly criticized for the predictability factor and weak writing.
The performances of Vadivelu and Fahadh garnered a unanimous response along with cinematography by Theni Eswar and music by AR Rahman receiving praise from several quarters. Social media has been abuzz with debates on whether the movie is based on the life of P Dhanapal, former speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly ever since its release.
Maamannan, according to sources, has earned more than 30 crores from across the country after five days of theatrical run. It is already said to be the highest-grossing project for Udhay, thus serving as a fitting finale to his acting career.
The producer-turned-actor-turned-politician gifted an SUV to Mari recently after the movie has been attracting crowds across Tamil Nadu. With no notable Tamil film releasing in theatres this Friday, the film is poised to gross around 50 crores.
