Varudu Kaavalenu director Lakshmi Sowjanya makes her digital debut with a rural comedy
ZEE5, which has taken aggressive steps to amp up its regional content, is coming up with Maa Neella Tank, a new Telugu show after Recce. The only similarity between Recce and Maa Neella Tank is its small-town setting. While the former was a thriller set in the 90s, the latter is a comedy. Headlined by Sushanth and Priya Anand, Maa Neella Tank is helmed by Lakshmi Sowjanya.
The teaser of Maa Neella Tank was launched earlier today. The one-minute glimpse starts with an influencer in a village named Buchivolu trying to commit suicide by jumping off a water tank. His parents and a cop do their best to avert him. The cop, played by Sushanth, is trying to woo another village belle. The teaser also takes you through an eccentric bunch of characters in the small-town.
The show, spanning eight episodes, is the OTT debut of Sushanth and marks Priya Anand’s return to the Telugu industry after a decade-long sabbatical. The director Lakshmi Sowjanya shares that Maa Neella Tank is a feel-good village comedy. The premise is centred on Gopal, the son of an MLA Kodandam, who threatens to commit suicide if his lady love Surekha doesn’t return.
Kodandam, who only has a few days before he could kickstart his election campaign, is perplexed about his son’s suicide bid. His relative Narasimham, at the same time, tries to add salt to the wound and seize power. Giri, sub-inspector in the village, is entrusted with the job of bringing back Surekha. Meanwhile, a corrupt Gurumurthy tries to make money with the excuse of water-tank repairs.
In simple terms, Maa Neella Tank, in the garb of a romantic comedy, is a tale about a water tank and a woman Surekha, sandwiched between a selfish bunch of people. Sudarshan, Nirosha, Vasu Inturi, Rama Raju, Divi Vadthya, Annapurnamma, Ambarisha and others too play important roles. The show, to release on July 15, was extensively shot in Cheerala earlier this year.
