More than a decade after he last played cop, Prem returns to khaki
On the occasion of his birthday on April 18, Kannada actor Prem, better known with the moniker Nenapirali or, better still, Lovely Star, attached to his name, has a new film announcement. The cast and crew of the film, as well as its title will be announced in the morning of April 18.
What’s special about this film is that it is being publicized as a rebranding exercise for the leading man, who, for the longest time has been associated with love stories and, thereby, lover-boy roles. That will change, they hope, as the as-yet-untitled film, which carries the tagline, ‘Be in Peace, or he’ll Pierce’, will have the actor in cop mode.
Interestingly, more than a decade ago, Prem had attempted to shake off his chocolate hero image. Back then, he’d done a film called Shatru, in which he played a rough-and-tough cop, a role for which he’d had a massive physical transformation and sported six-pack abs. This image changeover, though, did not sit well with his fans, and the film did not work at the box office. In no time, Prem was back to doing what he does best – romance.

In fact, the actor’s last release was Premam Poojyam, a big-budget romantic drama that had him in the role of a cardiologist, who eventually dies of broken heart syndrome, after failing to have his happily-ever-after with the love of his life. The makers of that film had subsequently announced another venture with Prem, a Rs 400-crore film on the life of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, but nearly 3 years later, there’s no word on this project taking off.

Instead, we now get this new film, which, not only has Prem playing a police officer, but, going by the hashtags in the announcement post, is likely to be about something that happens in one day/night at a police station.
