Actress Kalyani Priyadarshan’s much talked-about sports comedy drama film Sesham Mikeil Fathima, directed by Manu C Kumar, hit the theatres on November 17. The film is about Fathima, a football enthusiast with a passion for commentary.

Despite being competent, Fathima is criticised for her Malabar ‘slang’, and is asked to improve her Malayalam speaking skills before pursuing her goal as a commentator. The plot revolves around her journey to overcome these challenges and fulfil her dreams. Sesham Mikeil Fathima has been well received for the inspiring story and Kalyani’s performance.

However, when she embarks on a journey to fulfil her dreams in her conservative hometown, the situation takes an unforeseen twist. Directed by Kavya Prakash, Vaanku effectively depicts the challenging situation of women who rely on their husbands until the end - a consequence of early marriage that hinders their education.

4. How Old Are You?

A middle-aged married woman is earnestly attempting to transform her life. How Old Are You? features Manju Warrier as the lead. Her character’s aspiration to establish a new life in Ireland crumbles as her job applications are rejected by Irish companies. The transformation of her character from a frustrated woman to a steady and sprightly lady forms the crux of the film. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, this 2014 film was a huge success and was remade in Tamil as 36 Vayadhinile with Jyotika.

5. Kho-Kho

The narrative of Kho-Kho is centred on Maria Francis, a coach specialising in the traditional Indian sport kho kho at a school. The film narrates the journey of arranging a team of kho kho players in a girls school and the subsequent developments. Ultimately, Maria experiences immense joy and pride upon discovering that the most talented player from her former team has successfully made it into the national kho kho team. Starring Rajisha Vijayan, the film is directed by Rahul Riji Nair. It garnered a lot of attention for its inspiring storyline and performances.
