The complete plot of Kottukkaali has been revealed ahead of its much-awaited world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival.
In a groundbreaking moment for Tamil cinema, filmmaker PS Vinothraj's second feature movie, Kottukkaali also known as The Adamant Girl, is gearing up for its world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival. This marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first Tamil film to be featured in the World Cinema section.
As anticipation mounts for the debut on February 16, the complete plot of Kottukkaali has been revealed, offering a glimpse into the compelling narrative awaiting audiences.
The official synopsis of the movie unveils a poignant tale centred around two Indian families preparing for the wedding of their daughter, Meena, and son, Pandi. However, complications arise as Meena is in love with someone from a lower caste. The film unfolds after the wedding ceremonies are completed, and Meena's seemingly cold demeanour leads her family to believe she is possessed.
Convinced that Meena's silence is a result of possession, the families embark on a journey to seek the help of a demon vanquisher to exorcise any evil spirits. Kottukkaali takes a dark turn as it explores the consequences of the families' misguided actions, exposing the supposedly righteous violence towards Meena.
Set against the rural backdrop, Vinothraj seems to delve into the dehumanizing effects of believing in superstitious practices, while remaining oblivious to the sufferings of those close to us.
Malayalam star Anna Ben makes her Tamil cinema debut by essaying the lead role, while the film is expected to further boost Soori's career as a leading man, deviating from his comedic sidekick roles. Soori has achieved success with Viduthalai Part 1, garnering both critical acclaim and commercial success. In addition to Kottukaali, Soori's films Viduthalai Part 2 and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai have had festival premieres recently and received positive reviews.
Vinothraj gained fame following the critical success of his debut feature, Koozhangal aka Pebbles, which became India's official entry to the 94th Oscars. Impressed by Vinothraj's storytelling skills, Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan came on board to bankroll Kottukkaali under his production banner, SK Productions.
