Bramayugam, the highly anticipated period-horror thriller which stars megastar Mammootty in the lead role is gearing up for a pan-Indian release. The movie, which is helmed by director Rahul Sadasivan, is set to be released in five languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Even though the much-loved Bramayugam trailer confirmed that the project indeed has horror elements, the team members have confirmed that the Mammootty starrer is not a cliche ghost film.

Bhargavi Nilayam

This 1964-released film is the first-ever horror film produced in Malayalam cinema. Bhargavi Nilayam, which is helmed by Vincent, was based on Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s famous short story, Neela Velicham. Vijaya Nirmala played the titular character Bhargavi in the film, which featured Prem Nazir and Madhu as the protagonists. Vayanadan Thamban

This 1978-released Vincent directorial, which featured legend Kamal Haasan in the titular role, is one of the most underrated horror films of Malayalam cinema. The National award-winning actor played the role of a feudal warlord, who sacrifices virgin girls and drinks their blood to achieve immortality and ever-lasting youth. Devadoothan

This Sibi Malayil directorial, which was released in 2000, ended up as a commercial failure at that time. However, Devadoothan was eventually appreciated by the cine-goers and earned cult status over the years. The movie revolves around Mohanlal’s character Vishal Krishnamurthy, a gifted singer who returns to college, where he always experienced many supernatural phenomena, after many years. The extraordinary music score by Vidya Sagar makes this film an unforgettable cinematic experience. You can watch this musical horror thriller on Amazon Prime Video.

Aparichithan

This 2004-released film helmed by Sanjeev Sivan, which featured Mammootty in the titular role hit the theatres when Malayalam cinema was being restricted to white-saree-clad ‘yakshi’ (female ghost) stories. Even though Aparichithan was a commercial failure at the time of its release, the movie which revolves around the concept of ‘Ouija board’ eventually earned immense love from the audiences. Kavya Madhavan, Karthika, and Manya played the other pivotal roles in the film, which is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Ezra

Prithviraj Sukumaran teamed with director Jay K. for the 2017-released supernatural horror thriller film Ezra. The movie, which was inspired by the Hollywood horror film The Possession, emerged as a commercial success. Ezra garnered the attention of audiences with its unique treatment of the genre, and the performances by its lead cast. Priya Anand, Tovino Thomas, and Sudev Nair played the other pivotal roles in Ezra, which is now available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
