After a lull due to Ramzan and other big releases such as RRR, Beast and KGF: Chapter 2, Malayalam cinema is gearing up for a loaded May with as many as five big films queued for release on May 13. Four of these will hit the cinema halls while Mammootty’s Puzhu will be a direct-to-OTT release on Sony LIV.

What makes the week exciting is that it’s the first time since theatres reopened with 100% occupancy in Kerala that big films are hitting theatres on the same date. Earlier, the distributors and film exhibitors had planned in a way that only few films released in a week to ensure that all benefited from the space between releases. Here’s the list of Malayalam movies that will release on May 13:

Puzhu

Releasing on: Sony LIV

The thriller marks Mammootty’s first ever direct-to-OTT release. Also starring Parvathy Thiruvothu as the female lead, the movie is helmed by debutant Ratheena and has the megastar in a negative role. Puzhu revolves around a father and son, who had trust issues and share an uneasy dynamic.

Djinn

Releasing in: Theatres

Siddharth Bharathan’s thriller has Soubin playing the role of a man, who is either possessed by spirits or has a personality disorder. The fantasy drama, which also has Sharafudheen, Leona Lishoy, Santhy Balachandran and Shine Tom Chacko, is scripted by Kali writer Rajesh Gopinadhan.

Meri Awas Suno

Releasing in: Theatres

The feel-good entertainer marks the third collaboration between Jayasurya and director G Prajesh Sen after Vellam and Captain. Also starring Manju Warrier and Sshivada, the film has Jayasurya playing a radio jockey who has to face the shock of losing his voice and has to learn to live with his new life.

Jo and Jo

Releasing in: Theatres

The coming-of-age young-adult comedy revolves around siblings Jomol (Nikhila Vimal) and Jomon (Mathew Thomas), who are stuck together in their house during the pandemic lockdown. Their rising frustrations form the crux of the film, which also has Johnny Antony and Nalsen in pivotal roles.

Pathaam Valavu

Releasing in: Theatres

Based on a real-life incident that happened in Kerala, Joseph director M Padmakumar’s emotional thriller has Suraj Venjaramoodu playing a convict who violates the terms of his parole. Indrajith Sukumaran essays the role of a cop who is assigned to capture and bring him back to jail. The movie also has Aditi Ravi, Ajmal Amir and Swasika.
