The Malayalam film industry seems to be thriving of late, offering films guaranteed to please every kind of cinephile. Be it period films that offer a window to the past, or family dramas that teach one about what’s really important in life, or love stories that whisk you away to the world of romance, or social dramas inspired by real life that may seem even stranger than fiction- Mollywood has something for everyone. With the pandemic finally appearing to abate, knock on wood, cinephiles are flocking back to theatres to catch their favourite stars, be it Mammootty, Mohanlal, Nivin Pauly, Tovino Thomas, Fahadh Faasil, Asif Ali,Anna Ben, Nithya Menen, Parvathy or Nimisha Sajayan, on the big screen. But for those who were unable to catch the action on the big screen, fret not, as Amazon Prime Video has bagged the rights to some popular releases. Here’s a list of Malayalam films which have made their way onto Amazon Prime Video.

Vellaripattanam

Manju Warrier stars as Sunanda, a steely, ambitious woman, while Soubin portrays Suresh, her equally ambitious, yet less intelligent brother. Although the two can never see eye to eye, they are forced to unite to take down their opponents when an election rears its head. The political satire was directed by Mahesh Vettiyar in his directorial debut.

Chattambi

A loan shark’s henchman, Karia is found dead, and the list of suspects who want him dead is long and endless. The film traces the events that took place in Karia’s life that culminated in his death. The Abhilash S Kumar directorial stars Sreenath Bhasi, Mythili, Chemban Vinod Jose and Guru Somasundaram.

Maheshum Marutiyum

Mahesh has an inseparable bond with his Maruti 800, a car which has been in his family for over twenty years. However, when a young woman named Gauri enters his life, he finds himself having to make some difficult choices. Starring Asif Ali and Mamta Mohandas, the film was written and directed by Sethu.

Ela Veezha Poonchira

Set against the scenic hills of the titular hillocks, Ela Veezha Poonchira follows the story of two police officers who are stationed at a wireless police station, who become entangled in the investigation into a gruesome murder, starring Soubin Shahir, Jude Antany Joseph and Sudhy Kopa, the film marks the directorial debut of Shahi Kabir.

Christopher

Mammootty stars as the titular protagonist, a police officer known for taking the law into his own hands to ensure speedy delivery of justice, especially when it comes to crimes perpetrated against women. His vigilante path soon earns him the wrath of a dangerous criminal, and this get personal. Directed by B Unnikrishnan, the film also stars Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vinay Rai and Amala Paul.

Adrishyam

When a girl goes missing, a number of people, including the police and a private investigator hired by a politician, take up the responsibility of finding out where she is. But among them are also people who will stop at nothing to make sure that she is not found. The film is directed by Zac Harris and stars Joju George, Sharafudheen, Narain, Athmiya Rajan and Anandhi.

Thankam

Thankam follows the story of what follows when Kannan, a young goldsmith in Thrissur, goes missing while on a journey to Mumbai. When the police figure out what happened to Kannan, who was apprehended by cops a day before his journey, a full fledged investigation is launched into the matter. Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Biju Menon, Girish Kulkarni and Vineeth Thattil David star in the Saheed Arafath directorial.

Ennalum Ente Aliya

The life of Balakrishnan and Lakshmi, a couple eager to have children, take a turn when Vivek, Lakshmi’s brother, comes to stay with them. Chaos erupts when an overprotective couple who live in Balakrishnan and Lakshmi’s apartment complex, suspect their daughter of having an affair with Vivek, and try to confront him. Starring Siddique, Lena, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Gayathri Arun, Ennalum Ente Aliya is directed by Bash Mohammed.

Pyali

Siblings Ziah and Pyali, who live in the slums of Kochi, are orphaned when their parents die. Pyali’s older brother Ziah tries to make sure that his little sister wants for nothing, even as the duo try to get by with Ziah’s meagre earnings doing odd jobs. However, a number of elements threaten to part the duo. Directed by Babitha and Rinn, the film features Barbiee Sharma, George Jacob, Unni Mukundan, Sreenivasan, Mammukkoya and Aadukalam Muragadoss, among others.

Ullasam

Starring Shane Nigam and Pavithra Lakshmi, Ullasam tells the story of a young man and woman who meet on a train journey, and decide to have as much fun as they can during the journey, despite knowing little to nothing about each other. As fate would have it, the duo meet up yet again after almost a year, although under very different circumstances. The film was directed by Jeevan Jojo.

Shefeekkinte Santosham

Shefeek, an NRI living in Dubai, finds the greatest of joy in helping others. But his do-gooder nature soon puts him in a tough spot, when he receives an unpleasant visit from the police on the day of his engagement, after Shefeek gifts an old doctor friend a special gift from Dubai.

Gold

Gold marks Alphonse Puthren’s Malayalam comeback after Premam(2015). The 2022 film follows the story of a mobile shop owner named Joshy who finds a pick up truck abandoned in front of his house, which contains smuggled gold bars. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nayanthara, Roshan Mathew and Baburaj, and also features cameos from the likes of Chemban Vinod Jose, Jagadish, Vinay Forrt and many others.

4 Years

Starring Priya Prakash Varrier and Sarjano Khalid, this romantic drama revolves around the story of Gayatri and Vishal, two college students who were in a romantic relationship, as they try to make the most of their last two days in their campus, while trying to fix the rift that came about between them. The film was directed by Ranjith Sankar.

Kooman

Starring Asif Ali, Kooman follows the story of police officer Giri Shankar, an intelligent police officer with an easily bruised ego, which at times leads him to misuse his position to settle petty grudges. When his new circle inspector humiliates him in front of his entire village, it results in Giri going down an unexpected path to gain revenge, and leads him to acquire an ‘addiction’ he cannot shake off easily. The Jeethu Joseph directorial also features Renji Panicker, Jaffar Idukki, Baiju, Baburaj, Riyas Narmakala and Hannah Reji Koshy.

Sree Dhanya Catering Service

Sree Dhanya Catering Service tells the story of a group of men who take it upon themselves to cook biryani for a birthday party. However, the task is easier said than done, and hilarity ensues as they start the mammoth task. Prashant Murali, Gilu Joseph, Beena Jeo and Jeo Baby star in the comedy drama directed by the latter.

Pathonpathaam Noottaandu

Set in the 19th century, Pathonpathaam Noottaandu is inspired by the life of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, a warrior and social reformer who fought against injustices perpetrated against lower caste communities. The Vinayan directorial was released in theatres on September 8 and stars Siju Wilson, Anoop Menon, Kayadu Lohar and Chemban Vinod Jose in pivotal roles.

Padma

Starring Anoop Menon and Surabhi Lakshmi in lead roles, Padma follows the story of a couple, Rani and Padmaja, who settle into a new house. Things get complicated when Padmaja starts to develop feelings for another man. Anoop Menon has also written and directed the film, which was released in theatres on July 15.

Sabhash Chandrabose

Sabhash Chandrabose is set in the 1980s, when televisions in each and every home was far from being a common sight. The film follows the story of Chandrabose who, after having an argument with his friend Yathindran, who is one of the few people in his village to own a black and white TV, vows to get himself a television. The hilarious way in which he tries to achieve this, makes up the rest of the story. Vishnu Unnikrishnan and Johny Antony star.

Kotthu

Directed by Sibi Malayil, Kotthu revolves around the story of two friends belonging to a political who are incited to take revenge when one of their party workers is murdered. However, their actions take a huge emotional toll on them and their loved ones. The film stars Asif Ali, Roshan Mathew and Nikhila Vimal in lead roles.

Panthrand

A coastal town riddled with crime undergoes a transformation for the better when a mysterious stranger makes his way to its shores and influences its villagers to lead better lives. The Leo Thaddeus directorial stars Dev Mohan, Vinayakan and Shine Tom Chacko.

Mike

Starring Anaswara Rajan, Ranjith Sajeev and Jinu Joseph, Mike follows the story of Sara, a young woman who is desirous of undergoing gender affirming surgery, and Antony, a young man with a tragic past. The film is directed by Vishnu Sivaprasad.

Ottu

Ottu follows the story of Kichu, a man who takes up the task of helping an amnesiac crime boss uncover his memory. But as Kichu starts to get close to the gangster, he realises that things are not what they seem. Kunchacko Boban and Arvind Swami star.
