The ravages of the pandemic had taken a toll on the film industry, which is rising back from the ashes to be as strong as ever it seems. The current year saw a plethora of brilliant titles take the silver screen by storm, be it on the big screen or on OTT. And what better way to end a year that granted audiences with delightful film titles, than by binging them all and really soaking in the magic of the storytelling that the filmmakers have to offer. OTTplay has compiled a list of some of the most popular movie titles to hit the silver screen this year, across languages and genres, that should not escape your watchlist.

Bhagwaan Bachave

Co-directed by Jhinal Belani and Bhaumik Sampat, Bhagwaan Bachave tells the tale of three people who find themselves the recipient of an inheritance that runs to millions. However, they soon realise that their good luck comes with strings attached. The Gujarati film stars Jhinal Belani, Bhaumik Sampat, Muni Jha, Raunaq Kamdar, Vaishakh Ratanben, Ojas Rawal, Bhavini Janii and Prem Ghadhavi.

777 Charlie

Starring Rakshit Shetty, 777 Charlie follows the story of a grumpy,lonely factory worker whose life changes for the better when a playful puppy crosses his path. The Kiranraj K directorial can be streamed on Voot and Amazon Prime Video.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect marks R Madhavan’s debut directorial. The biographical drama follows the story of Nambi Narayanan, an ISRO scientist who was accused of espionage. The multilingual film can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and Voot.

India Lockdown

Starring Shweta Basu Prasad, Aahana Kumra, Prateik Babbar, Sai Tamhankar and Prakash Belawadi, the Madhur Bhandarkar directorial is set against the backdrop of the unprecedented lockdowns declared in the country following the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, and explores how the lives of different Indians were affected by the same. The film can be streamed on ZEE5.

Kantara

Kantara follows the story of the tussle over a centuries old forest land, which leads to conflicts between the government, a landlord and the villagers who live there. Rishab Shetty and Kishore star in the film, which Shetty also directed. The film can be streamed on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Starring Dayanand Reddy, Brahmaji, Santosh Shoban, Faria Abdullah, Mime Gopi and Sudharshan, this Merlapaka Gandhi directorial follows the story of two travel vloggers who find themselves in the midst of a conflict between naxalites and police officers. The film can be streamed on SonyLIV.

Arjuna Sanyasi

Arjuna Sanyasi follows the story of the titular protagonist, a newly married rickshaw driver who lives with his parents, and his struggles to try and enjoy the new chapter in his life. The film, starring C C Rao, Soundarya Gowda, Abhinaya, Nagendra Sha, Suraj Comedy Khiladi, Vaani, and Roopa Raayappa, the film can be streamed on Namma Flix.

Hridayam

Starring Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Darshana Rajendran, Hridayam follows the story of Arun Neelankadan, chronicling his life in college and after getting married. The film was written and directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan. The film can be streamed on Disney+Hotstar.

RRR

The biggest blockbuster of the year, this SS Rajamouli directorial tells the fictionalised tale of real life Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem. Starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan in lead roles, the film is available on Netflix, ZEE5 and Disney+Hotstar.

Monica, O My Darling

Starring Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi, Sikandar Kher and Radhika Apte, the Netflix film follows the story of Jayant, whose rising professional achievements are threatened when a woman he has an affair with tries to blackmail him. In his desperation, he agrees to team up with people who also want to get rid of the woman, and they hatch a sinister plan.

Padavettu

Padavettu follows the story of a former athlete named Ravi, who is looked down upon by his family and those around him for his apathetic behaviour, until a chance to speak out for his loved ones force him to change. Nivin Pauly, Aditi Balan and Shammi Thilakan star in this Liju Krishna directorial, which is available for streaming on Netflix.

Rorschach

Starring Mammootty, Rorschach follows the story of Luke, a UK returned citizen who stumbles into a police station of a village claiming to have found his wife missing after the two were in an accident. Despite police calling off the search after some time, Luke refuses to give up. The Nissam Basheer directorial can be streamed on Disney+Hotstar.

Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1

Mani Ratnam’s epic historical drama traces the rise of one of the most well known emperors of the Chola dynasty, emperor Rajaraja I. The film, which features an ensemble cast comprising of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban and Lal, can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Chup: Revenge Of The Artist

Starring Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan and Shreya Dhanwanthary, Chup: Revenge Of The Artist follows the story of a police officer who is tasked with the investigation into a serial killer, who kills critics who give dishonest reviews of films. The R Balki directorial can be streamed on ZEE5.

Thiruchitrambalam

Starring Dhanush, Nitya Menen and Prakash Raj, Thiruchitrambalam follows the story of the titular protagonist, a food delivery driver. Amidst his struggles to find love and his icy relationship with his father, his only solace is the time spent with his best friend, Shobana. The film is available on SunNXT.

Thallumaala

Wazim, a young man who can never seem to say no to a fight, finds his penchant for getting into fights become a part of every major milestone in his life, right up to his wedding. Starring Tovino Thomas, the Khalid Rahman directorial can be streamed on Netflix.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu

Starring Kunchacko Bob, Nna Thaan Case Kodu follows the story of reformed thief Rajeevan who is accused of trying to rob an MLA’s house. After suffering humiliation, he decides to take those responsible to court. The film can be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.

Darlings

Starring Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew this Netflix film follows the story of a young woman who is constantly abused by her husband, until she decides to fight back. The film was directed by Jasmeet K. Reen.

Gargi

Starring Sai Pallavi, Gargi follows the story of a teacher who sets off on a mission to prove her father’s innocence, after the latter has been accused of assaulting a minor girl. The Gautham Ramachandran directorial can be streamed on SonyLIV.

Sita Ramam

Starring Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur, Sita Ramam follows the story of an army officer who, after receiving anonymous love letters, sets off on a journey to discover the woman who writes them. The film can be streamed on Disney+Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video.

James

One of the late Puneeth Rajkumar’s final films, James follows the story of Major Santhosh Kumar, who sets off on a mission to take down a drug mafia. The film, which also features Priya Anand is written and directed by Chethan Kumar and can be streamed on SonyLIV.

Saani Kaayidham

Saani Kaayidham follows the story of Ponni, a constable who goes on a spree of revenge after a terrible tragedy befalls her. Starring Keerthy Suresh and Selvaraghavan, the film can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
