On Selvaraghavan's birthday, OTTplay compiles a list of five of his films you can stream right now, from Kaadhal Kondein to Aayirathil Oruvan
Actor-director Selvaraghavan celebrates his birthday today (March 5). The filmmaker, who is known for bringing a distinct voice into Tamil cinema, has also proved his versatility with his acting chops. After giving a noted performance in Farhana, Selvaraghavan will appear in his brother Dhanush's upcoming directorial Raayan. On that note, we at OTTplay would like to bring you a list of best Selvaraghavan films you can stream from the comfort of your home.
Starring Ravi Krishna and Sonia Agarwal in the lead roles, 7G Rainbow Colony became one of the commercial blockbusters and made the Tamil film industry turn heads to note Selvaraghavan. The romantic drama, much like the filmmaker's other films, is a tragedy that follows the lives of two youngsters who fall in love barring their differences and backgrounds. The film received both critical acclaim and commercial success. Yuvan Shankar Raja had scored the music for the film and tracks like Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthen, Kan Pesum Varthaigal became evergreen hits.
Pudhupettai is a crime action drama starring Dhanush in the lead role. The film is set in the titular area in Chennai and follows a poor student who rises to become a gangster. The film became one of the early roles in Dhanush's career to prove his acting prowess and become a commercial star. Also starring Sneha, Sonia Agarwal, Azhagar Perumal, and others, Pudhupettai has become one of the iconic gangster dramas to come out from the Tamil industry.
Mayakkam Enna is a psychological coming-of-age drama, starring Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay. The film features Dhanush as an aspiring photographer who goes on to become a successful wildlife photographer with his wife by his side. While the film was received well at the time of its release, Mayakkam Enna did have some elements that did not age well. For instance, the misogynistic lyrics from the song Kadhal Yen Kadhal were called out for glorifying violence against women. However, later Selvaraghavan had apologised for it.

In his directorial debut, Selvaraghavan's Kaadhal Kondein became a massive success and paved the way for Dhanush to spotlight. In this romantic drama, Dhanush plays the role of a socially awkward teenager Vinod who falls in love with Divya (Sonia Agarwal) who is famous in his college. Often secluded for his strange behaviour, Vinod soon becomes mentally unstable in his aim to win over Divya. Another tragedy from Selvaraghavan, Kaadhal Kondein became a visiting card for the actor and director in the Tamil industry.
Aayirathil Oruvan is an action-adventure film, starring Karthi, Andrea Jeremiah and Reemma Sen in the lead roles. The fictional story takes inspiration from the ancient Tamil kingdoms of Cholas and Pandyas. The film follows a troupe of archaeologists who undertake a journey to find the lost kingdom of Cholas. While the film achieved cult status eventually, Aayirathil Oruvan has music scored by GV Prakash. A sequel for the film was announced in 2021 with Dhanush. However, it is yet to be materialised.
